Texas State baseball finally beat Arkansas State in San Marcos for the first time ever but it took them two tries on Friday to get there.

In just the second conference loss of the season for Texas State, they dropped the first of a double-header at Bobcat Ballpark, 13-7. The Bobcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first game, the second game in a row they got an early lead only to watch it slip away (3-0 on A&M, lost 9-3).

"We threw a ball away and we did some other defensive things that created havoc for us," Texas State head coach Ty Harrington said. "We didn't drive some guys in when we had the bases loaded in the third. With one out, we hit into a double play. We were up 4-0 at the time and that kind of stole some momentum from us. It's going to happen sometimes... (Arkansas State) made the pitches in game one when they had to and those were some things we needed to get out for game two."

In game two, the runs started early and didn't let up for the Bobcats, as they beat the Red Wolves soundly, 16-7.

"We rebounded in game two," Harrington said. "We were offensive, which is what we have to do... Bottom line in us winning the second game pitched better. We needed to bounce back and find a way to win in game two, and we did. Wasn't the prettiest game you are going to watch, probably one of the longer ones, but definitely not one of the prettier ones."

"The key thing, when you get into conference play this time of year, is to find ways to win and will yourself to win, and that's what we did."

Junior outfielder Derek Scheible went 3-6 with four RBI in the win, finishing the day 5-11. Scheible hit his sixth homer of the season in the win, which is third most in the Sun Belt.

"I was seeing the ball really well and I was just trying to stick to my approach," Scheible said. "I was trying to hit the ball the other way and I was seeing it well."

Texas State went 14-4 in March, which ties a program record for the most wins in that month. Had they swept the double-header, they would have surpassed the 1992 team that also won 14 games in March.

Quick turnaround as Texas State (17-10, 6-2) and Arkansas State (13-13, 3-5) complete the three-game series this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.
